by Steve Lopez- Photo: Chris Farina – Top Rank- The stage is set for Saturday’s Jr. Featherweight showdown between highly favorite WBO Champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire and Jorge “Travieso” Arce. Wednesday marked the final press conference where fighters addressed the members of the media and to reinforce what to expect in their performances. The co-featured bout will feature Cuba’s up and coming rising star Guillermo Rigondeaux against Thailand’s Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym.

To show boxing’s global presence with fighters and fans, Wednesday’s conference featured a rather interesting mix of fighter backgrounds: Mexico, Cuba, Thailand and the Philippines. It was no surprise that each fighter, with the exception of Donaire, required a translator to get their points across. I had the privilege to attend the conference and captured some visuals and quotes from each fighter:

Guillermo Rigondeax was a man of few words ready to fight.

“Nothing much to say. We’re ready to get this going.”

“I want to thank everyone for being here. There’s nothing to say at this point in time. Just get in the right and fight.
“It’ll be a great fight for me and a great show.”
Jorge Arce wants to keep the Mexican party going for one more week.

“I’m very excited because this will be the best fight of my life.”
“I don’t want to say anything about who’s going to win. Don’t want to make any predictions or promises to anyone. I just promise a great fight.”
“Donaire is a friend of mine. I admire him. I respect him. Because of the respect and admiration, I’ve prepared like never before.
“What happened with Pacquiao and Marquez last Saturday is going to happen again. The new surprise!”

Nonito Donaire took the podium last to address the media and fans.

“One thing that Arce and I both agree on is that the fight will not go the distance.”
“December 15th is going to get hot in here.”

To reiterate the international theme for the main event fights, Bob Arum casually and jokingly said in between the Poonsawat and Rigondeaux introduction and comments:

“This is great. I bring the fighters up here to talk and neither of them can understand each other.”

HBO Sports rings in the holiday season with an action-packed doubleheader from deep in the heart of Texas when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: NONITO DONAIRE VS. JORGE ARCE AND GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX VS. POONSAWAT KRATINGDAENGGYM is seen SATURDAY, DEC. 15 at 9:30 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT), from the Toyota Center in Houston, exclusively on HBO. The HBO broadcast team of Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Roy Jones Jr. will be ringside for the event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

This has been the best year ever for British sport, with the Olympics and everything,” he concedes. “And I definitely thought it was going to be my year, too. Instead, I really did miss out.”
In his own fertile mind, Khan had daydreamed about putting the seal on the glorious 12 months by winning an end-of-year Las Vegas super fight, against, say, Floyd Mayweather. Instead, here he is, a mere afterthought in the year of years, beginning his ring comeback tonight with no great fanfare in a non-title feature against the unbeaten but unthreatening Carlos Molina in Los Angeles.

Yet Khan still feels humbled that it was the astonishing embrace of the London Olympic crowds which helped him to clamber back to his feet and take this first key step in the latest reinvention of his career following his shattering defeat by Danny Garcia in their world light-welterweight unification bout in July.
Khan had suffered that fourth-round hammering just a fortnight before the Games started, leaving more than a few critics speculating that this third loss, and second in succession after the controversial reverse to Lamont Peterson, might be career-ending. “It was a hard one to overcome at the time. I was feeling so bad, trying to come to terms with it all,” Khan concedes.

Yet a commentary spell with the BBC at the Games brought release from the self-recrimination for a man who had once been a teenage Olympic sensation himself. “I thought people would be upset with me and that I’d be losing fans, but it turned out to be the total opposite. The Olympic Park was crazy. Whenever I did interviews there, it was packed full of people, waving to me, cheering and wanting to shake my hand. Having the support of the British public at that time helped me get that confidence back. It made a massive difference, knowing there were so many people behind you, still supporting you.”

He felt the love throughout the astonishing sporting summer here, whether it be from the aspiring young fighters in the £1 million gym he built back home in Bolton or from the kids who he has been inspiring around the country with his involvement in the StreetGames community charity projects.

And they brought his smile back. There is something irrepressible about Khan; he offers an ebullient impression that his belief in himself has not diminished one iota. 2012 won’t be a wash out, he is adamant, because the Garcia defeat made him see with painful clarity where he was going wrong – too complacent, too swayed by the Los Angeles celebrity whirl and not focussed enough – and forced him to rebuild his sporting life more studiously.

So he ditched his illustrious trainer Freddie Roach, who he felt was not giving him his full care and attention, and turned to Virgil Hunter, the man who has guided the career of the exceptional Andre Ward, arguably the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Instead of Los Angeles, whose bright lights wooed him, Khan says he feels chilled and focussed in his new quieter San Francisco base.
“The lifestyle out here is slower, not so much going on but having fewer distractions has really helped me. Now, I just live and eat boxing. I wake up, I think about boxing. I go to sleep and all I think about the next day’s training. It’s exactly what I needed.” The result? “I’ve changed my style to become a more complete fighter.”
Utilising Hunter’s exhaustive attention to detail in breaking down and correcting defensive deficiencies, Khan says he will become more patient, more selective and accurate in his attacks, no longer to be drawn into macho toe-to-toe dust-ups when a more cerebral approach, with his technical skill and speed, suffices.
Whether in seething battle, he can be somehow persuaded to keep his head above the red mist so that his rare gifts can be used most effectively, remains the $64,000 question. If he can, Khan, for all the resurfacing of familiar doubts about his punch resistance emanating from the Garcia pummelling, is convinced he can still achieve his quest to be an all-time great.

“I feel like a battle-scarred veteran now, I really do, but I’m only 26, there’s so much more to achieve. My ultimate ambition is to be recognised as one of the great boxers of my generation.”
That superfight he dreamed of this year? Khan accepts there is a danger of looking too far ahead but cannot resist the thought that, this time next year, he could be handing the great Mayweather his first defeat. “I definitely believe in my heart of hearts that I can beat him and it’s all about timing in this game. Mayweather is dipping a little bit; he’s been in prison and I don’t think he’ll be the same. Time will tell. Time to catch him.”

So never mind 2012; next year is going to be another extraordinary whirl for one of Britain’s most important sports figures. Khan is getting married in May, will start up his own charitable foundation and begin running his own new promotions company. He believes the Amir Khan “brand” is strong enough not to need the legend “world champion” after his name but that title still means everything to him.
“Well, I’ve given the Olympians the chance to enjoy their sporting year,” Khan says with a smile. “Now, 2013 will be mine.”

MONTREAL (December 12, 2012) – Only two more days before Laval’s popular Jean Pascal (26-2-1, 16 KOs) finally returns to the ring at the Bell Centre in Montreal, away since his heart-breaking loss 19 months ago to Bernard Hopkins, which cost him his World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight title belt.
Contrary to his normally calm approach to a fight, Pascal feels anxious and nervous over his time away from the ring going into Friday night’s fight against an opponent who also boxed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, as Pascal did, 2004 Polish Olympian Aleksy Kuziemski (26-2-1, 16 KOs). It is not the fear of his opponent’s attack – Pascal has never been afraid of another fighter – rather the anxiety of having lost his bearings, not being able to fulfill the expectations of the loyal Quebec public. He is well prepared, as skilled as ever, and he will give his best effort on Friday night.
Pascal’s potential world title fight on HBO against WBC World Champion Chad Dawson, at least for now, remains down the road. All that Pascal is focused on right now is Friday, Dec.14, and his tough European opponent.

Lemieux against Russian Ayrapetyan
As previously announced, Friday evening’s co-feature will showcase relentless Montreal slugger David Lemieux (27-2-1, 26 KOs) in a 10-round fight. His opponent is 31-year-old Russian Alberto Ayrapetyan (20-3-0, 9 KOs), who resides and fights out of Germany. Ayrapetyan has suffered only one defeat before the limit, losing to the great middleweight champion of the world, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, in the 11th round of their WBC Latino Championship fight. Ayrapetyan, as Lemieux, is of Armenian origin. Lemieux speaks French, English, Armenian, Spanish and Arabic; Ayrapetyan is also multilingual, according to his Facebook page, fluent in German, Spanish, Portuguese, Armenian and Russian. These two should find it easy to understand each other the ring.

Alvarez vs. 2011 European champion Danny “The Big Mac” McIntosh
Englishman Danny “Big Mac” McIntosh (13-3-0, 7 KOs), 32, will challenge talented North American Boxing Association (NABA) lightweight champion Eleider “Storm” Alvarez (10-0-0, 6 KOs). McIntosh was the Great Britain light heavyweight champion from 2008 to 2009, as well as European titlist in 2011. He lost his last two fights by technical knockout in valiant efforts against aspiring world champions. In May of 2011, he lost his European title in the eighth round to Eduard Gutknect (24-1-0, 9 KOs) in Germany. The judges’ scoring indicated a close fight going into the eighth round. In a similarly contested fight last April in Liverpool, England, McIntosh was stopped in the fifth round by his United Kingdom compatriot, Tony Bellew (19-1-0, 16 KOs). McIntosh’s three career losses (his other defeat was to current World Boxing Organization 175-pound champion Nathan Cleverly) have been to some of the best light heavyweights in the world.

“Storm has so much talent and determination,” said Alvarez’ promoter, GYM president Yvon Michel, “it has been tempting to move him faster. He has demonstrated that, despite having had only 10 professional fights, he can do as good as the best in the light heavyweight division, even against those with twice his experience.”

Bizier, McGuinness and Rivas, confirmed opponent
Quebec favorite Kevin Bizier (18-0-0, 13 KOs) will back into the ring for the second time this year, matched Friday night with welterweight Doel “Amish Guy” Carrasquillo (16-22-1, 14 KOs), of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Toronto’s unbeaten Logan McGuinness (18-0-1, 9 KOs), a protégé of Adam Harris (Hennessy Sports Canada), will defend his NABA super featherweight title against Carlos Manuel Reyes (23-1-1, 15 KOs), from the Dominican Republic.

Quebec heavyweight Oscar Rivas (11-0-0, 6 KOs), who has fully recovered from a recent hand injury, takes on 36-year-old Hungarian invader Lazlo Peczeli (4-2-1, 3 KOs).
The opening fights on the stacked “Fast & Furious” card pits spectacular featherweight prospect Marc “Gwapo” Pagcaliwangan (1-0-0, 1 KO), fighting for the second time straight time in Montreal, against Hungarian boxer Richard Voros (4 -10-0, 1 KO), followed by heavyweight battle between Ottawa favorite Andrew Gardiner (5-0-0, 2 KOs) and Attila Nagy Tibor (4-5-0, 3 KOs), of Budapest, Hungary.
Friday night’s event will be available for viewing by fans in the comfort of their homes via Canal Indigo, Bell TV, Shaw TV in Canada, as well as on WealthTV in the United States.

Live coverage of the fight for Magee's WBA “regular” super-middleweight title will be broadcast on SuperSport 2, with the action in Derning starting at 9.30 pm (SA, CAT, GMT+2).Kessler, a former WBA and WBC champion, has lost only two of his 47 fights, winning 34 by knockout. Magee, an Irishman from Belfast, stands at 36-4-1, with 25 knockouts.
The 33-year-old Kessler, who lives in Copenhagen, has had only four fights since September 2009 when he stopped Gusmyr Perdermo in the fourth round.On November 21, 2009 he was badly cut and lost on an 11th-round technical decision to Andre Ward. But he retoured to beat Carl Froch, Mehdi Bouadla and Allan Green.

Magee has also not been overly active. The 37-year-old southpaw has had only five fights since December 2008.He stopped Mads Larsen in the seventh round and Roman Aramyan in the eighth before IBF super-middleweight champion Lucien Bute beat him in the tenth round to retain the title in March last year.

Soon afterwards, on July 30, Magee beat Jaime Barboza over 12 rounds in a clash for the interim WBA super-middleweight title. He retained the belt by stopping Rudy Markussen in the fifth round in February this year.

When Andre Ward was elevated to WBA “super” champion, Magee was made “regular” champion.
Kessler has will have hometown advantage but Magee could have the edge in power and speed in what could be an entertaining bout.

The Boxing Match is due to take place at Herning in Jyske Bank Boxen Stadium. That means Kessler has the home crowd behind him. Kessler vs Magee Live fight will spark a life in them. Get ready for Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV by rewatching the previous epic fights in their rivalry. Today, fight #2 and the closest fight of the series.

This Saturday, December 8, Manny Pacquiao faces Juan Manuel Marquez live on HBO PPV. This is the 4th meeting between these two. According to the judges, Pacquiao currently leads the series 2-0-1, though every single one of their fights is not without controversy. In anticipation of Pacquiao vs. Marquez IV, we present the first three fights of this classic rivalry, available online in their entirety courtesy of HBO Sports. After the closely contested and much debated split draw in their first fight, Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez II seemed inevitable. But it wasn't until March 15, 2008, four years after the previous fight that the rematch took place.

In those 4 years, Pacquiao had gone 7-1, suffering a loss at the hands of Erik Morales, but emphatically avenging that loss and establishing himself as a bona fide boxing phenom. He had improved his right hand, making him more versatile, though there was also a perception that he had lost some of his aggression. Marquez had gone 6-1 and scored a big win over Marco Antonio Barrera. Both men had made the jump up from Featherweight (126 pounds) to Super Featherweight (130 pounds).

The rematch was a very different animal from the first fight. Gone was the explosive Pacquiao start and the wild drama, replaced instead by a highly technical battle, punctuated by moments of violence. For boxing purists, this is the fight of the series, with both men performing superbly.

It's also the closest of the fight. For me, Marquez won it 114-113, though there are numerous rounds that are extremely tough to call. To show how close it is, I had it tied after 11, with Marquez winning the fight in the final 3 minutes.

Judges didn't agree with me, giving Pacquiao the split decision win, 115-112, 112-115, 114-113. If you combine all three judges' score cards from both fights, after this second fight, you're left with a score of 679-678 Pacquiao. Think about that for a minute - 72 rounds judged, and only 1 point separates the two men.

Not surprisingly, the issue was still not settled.

By Scott Gilfoid:- The man that should be given all the credit for a victory for 40-year-old Audley Harrison (28-5, 21 KO’s) this Saturday night over British heavyweight champion David Price (13-0, 11 KO’s) is the talented 6’7″ American Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s), who gave Harrison four weeks of absolutely priceless sparring to get him ready for the 6’8″ Price.

Wilder, 26, is perhaps the biggest puncher in the heavyweight division at this time, and his right hand is already becoming legendary with him knocking guys out with one shot over and over again. Wilder is on a course for a heavyweight title. However, he was good enough to help out Harrison with a bit of sparring after getting a good offer to come join his camp recently. Wilder wasn’t the only talented fighter that helped Harrison out. He also had unbeaten Malik Scott (35-0) and Joe Hanks (20-0) lending a hand as well.

This trio of heavyweights have got to be the best set of heavyweights that could ever be used to get someone ready for a big fight. If Harrison gets beaten by Price you can’t say it was because he was ill-prepared for the encounter. If anything, you could say Harrison was too prepared, if that’s possible. But the time spent with Wilder is going to definitely help Harrison in this fight, because Wilder is a much bigger puncher than Price, with better hand speed and much better athleticism.

I’m just hoping that Harrison is still cogent after spending the four long weeks sparring with Wilder day after day, because Harrison already admitted that Wilder “Punches like a mule’ and that he was often with clean shots from him day after day. Harrison did have a slight advantage that may have helped him make it out of the camp in one piece in that Wilder was wearing 16 ounce gloves and Harrison was wearing headgear to protect him from Wilder’s heat-seeking missiles from his right hand.

Harrison and Price will be meeting up this Saturday at what will likely be a packed Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. For Harrison, this is definitely a do or die fight. He can’t afford to lose if he wants to remain relevant. For Price, he needs this victory to try and break the top 15 in the world rankings. A loss to Harrison would be a huge blow to his career and it would affirm the opinion that a lot of boxing fans have of Price having a glass jaw.

“I’m very proud to be the British champion and it is something that can never be taken away from me,” said Price. “If you asked me what I would want to win as a boxer, it would be two things: to be called British champion and world champion.

“The British title still means a lot, but there are so many world titles the whole system has got watered down. There is still only one British champion at any one time, though, and that makes it special.”Price aims to send a message that he is ready for a step up to world class by beating Harrison and setting up a possible showdown with either David Haye or Tyson Fury.

{@} Toshiaki Nishioka vs Nonito Donaire Live Spot Update :-

BOB ARUM:- I am delighted to be on this call. Everybody that has any connection with boxing is excited about this card. The 122 lb. championship that will be defended by Nonito Donaire is going to be a classic. I had the opportunity to watch Toshiaki Nishioka when he fought Rafael Márquez and he is a terrific fighter and we know that Nonito is one of the great fighters in boxing but he’s going to have his hands full. I believe that his fight with Nishioka will be as exciting and as interesting as the co-feature with Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado at The Home Depot Center. We have sold over 5,000 tickets and looking for a crowd of around 7,000 which will be a virtual sell-out.

CAMERON DUNKIN:- This is a fight that Nonito has wanted for a very long time. Nishioka is a great fighter. This is the kind of fight that Nonito, who is one of the great fighters fighting today and also in history, these are the kinds of fights that you get excited about because this is really a historic fight.

ROBERT GARCIA:- Nishioka is a great fighter and the best in the division. He is ranked as the best super bantamweight in the world. It’s going to be a really tough fight but Nonito has been training really hard and he has to come out and perform and do what he’s been doing so far.

NONITO DONAIRE:- Training camp has been going excellent. We had our last sparring yesterday and we are mentally prepared and physically prepared for this big fight next weekend and we are going to put the game plan in the works and come out of this fight victorious.What do you think about the fact Nishioka has not fought much recently?

NONITO DONAIRE:- I think that being older and being a veteran their record is never as bad as it is. We have been training really hard for this fight – we don’t want to take any chances at all. I believe when we are at this level and at this age and even if he hasn’t fought in a while he can be very dangerous.You have been winning and dominating but three fights in a row without a spectacular KO…

NONITO DONAIRE:- We have been fighting the fights and getting the victories and I think that’s what counts most. These guys I have been fighting are world champions and they are at the top of their game. Sometimes you don’t get the results that people look for. People expect a lot from me. We have been trying to change things up to get different results. Against Nishioka we can’t let our guard down and going back to the old Nonito Donaire style of fighting smart.Nishioka has not been stopped since his second pro fight in ’95 – how much would it mean to get the KO?

NONITO DONAIRE:- When it comes it comes but the proper game plan will show my power which is what I was known for – lightning fast counters that were knocking people out because they never saw it coming. No matter how tough you are, if you don’t see where it’s coming from, you don’t expect it and it will knock you down.

ROBERT GARCIA:- We all know when the guys move up in weight the punches get stronger and the opponents have all been world-class fighters so it is more difficult to get the KO. It won’t be easy against Nishioka but at the beginning of training camp Nonito told me he wanted to come in and do it the way he used to do it – picking them apart little by little then knocking them out. He’s been doing it in training against lightweights, super lightweights – he’s been landing beautiful punches and combinations and I have no doubt he will do it against Nishioka. I am not pushing or asking for the knockout but in training he has been doing the right thing and if he performs like he did in training I will be happy with him.How do you think Nishioka will try to get the job done?


NONITO DONAIRE:- One thing he will try to do is land the straight that is difficult to do against me. Aside from that, I haven’t seen any tape that he can do damage with. He did great against Márquez, but Márquez is a lot slower than me. A lot of those punches won’t land with me with power. But we are very worried and very mindful of that advantage he has.How much is he being a southpaw a problem for you?

NONITO DONAIRE:- It is not so bad. I have sparred with a lot of southpaws over the years. Darchinyan was a notable southpaw and I knocked him out. And Márquez was one of the guys I took apart as well when I did decide to turn it on. We are mindful he is a southpaw. I try to do the things that are difficult for me against a southpaw and that’s one thing we figured out.How is the drug testing going?

NONITO DONAIRE:- Pretty good. A couple of days ago they showed up at my door and took 4 tubes of blood – the last time they only took 2. You never know when they’ll come in. I really believe in it. It’s good for boxing – it’s random so you really can’t hide anything at all.

The 2012 year for the sport of boxing saw some major ups and downs. There were numerous disappointments of big fights never actually happening, such as the Brandon Rios vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa fight that was supposed to take place back in April.If major fights like Rios vs. Gamboa actually occurred as planned, then boxing could have had a really amazing 2012.

Brandon Rios ended up fighting replacement Richard Abril that night instead, in what many of us sitting ringside viewed as a gift decision awarded to Rios, who seemed to be outboxed for most of the fight.Of course the ever frustrating Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. fight seemed to escape us for yet another year making the fans, media and everyone else get teased and slapped in the face yet again.

One of the best all-action fights of 2012 so far, Mike Alvarado vs. Mauricio Herrera, was actually on the same card as Rios vs. Abril. Both Alvarado and Herrera went to war and traded bombs, with Alvarado dominating the crowd-friendly exchanges, which earned him a unanimous decision that night.

Alvarado will be facing Brandon Rios next Saturday at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Ca. in what many are already calling the second coming of Gatti vs. Ward.With the final three months of 2012 now upon us, let's take a look at some significant fights that could be the best fight of the final quarter of 2012 for the sport of boxing.
